Sandra Val, 1979
Lives and works in Madrid
She graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid (2011-2015) and holds a Master's degree in Research in Art and Creation (2015-2017). Her participation in the 2021 Korean International Ceramics Biennial stands out, where she received an Honorable Mention. In 2022, she entered the first edition of the Co-net Art CeramicRes contemporary ceramic creation residency program at L'Alcora and was selected for the Manises International Ceramics Biennial. In 2023, she was invited to participate in La Iberoamericana, Women and Visual Arts of the 21st Century and received the award for her project "Habitar el Camino" at the second edition of Cultura Online by the Consorci de Museus de Valencia. In 2024, he will open his solo exhibition 'Utopia Planitia 49.7N 118.0E' at the Ginsberg+Tzu gallery in Lima, Peru, and present public works in Madrid's Plaza de Colón, organized by ADNFórum.
His work has been exhibited at the Barjola Museum in Gijón, the CAV La Neomudéjar Museum in Madrid, the Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art in Korea, and in various institutions and galleries in Spain, Portugal, Costa Rica, Venezuela, the United States, Austria, and Switzerland.
My work focuses on constructing imaginaries that posit utopia and timelessness. My research stems from a liminal state where fragments of tradition, present, and future converge, which I myself transmute and redefine, creating narratives and new dialogues that speak to us of time and space. In my work, I use diverse materials—porcelain, metal, textiles, and glass, among others—to generate works that transition between the recognizable and the abject. Architectural spaces associated with places of worship and power serve as inspiration for my installations and site-specific works. A broad symbolic universe that moves between physical reality and virtual settings.
The use of porcelain is strongly present in the domestic and industrial spheres, reflecting its use in everyday life and in the conquest of space. The sculptural pieces connect with elements that, in their synthesis, are related to playfulness, reminiscent of game and strategy boards. These sculptural forms, accompanied by tiled floors, function as a situation map. They propose a simulation where the viewer can playfully assess the hierarchy of power of each of the pieces, their meaning, and even their function in the landscape.
